With the presidential inauguration just days away and the NFL playoffs winding down to a showdown between the two teams who will play the Super Bowl, there’s another major event that will soon be vying for our attention: the start of the tax-filing season.
The official launch date for filing individual tax returns is this coming Monday, for those who want to get a jump on squaring things with Uncle Sam. And for those who prefer to delay and or procrastinate, you will have a few more days to do so this year.
Taxes are usually due April 15. But this year, the 15th is a Saturday.
Normally that would push the deadline to the following Monday.
But Emancipation Day — a holiday in Washington D.C. — will be observed on Monday, April 17. That means the slowpokes among us will have until April 18th to file returns and pay any amounts due.
